Cloud Forest Research
The Cloud Forest Laboratory is being developed as an innovative online connection between scientists, students, and scientifically-minded visitors from around the world. Once completed, this site will be a valuable tool allowing science classes anywhere to conduct real Cloud Forest experiments over the internet. Planned experiments include long-term insect counts, weather monitoring, hummingbird interactions, etc. We also hope to develop a this site as a forum that researchers can use to share data and ideas, facilitating collaboration between scientists all over the world!

The first steps we have taken towards implementation of this exciting on-line laboratory include the following:

  • In July, we followed the bird research being conducted by biologists Kathy and Greg Murray in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. Includes pictures of all species captured (and released) using mist-nets.
  • The weekly Monday Mystery Insect challenge, where field biologists post photographs once per week of insects or other creatures they encounter in the cloud forests of Costa Rica, and then let you know the identity the following week.
  • The insect archives, with copies of all photographs from previous weeks.
  • A list of research activities currently being conducted in the cloud forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica.

This website was developed to enhance global understanding of the unique and important cloud forests of Central America. Through their impact on water and soil quality, climate patterns, and numerous known and unknown plant and animal species, cloud forests profoundly affect life surrounding them and life around the planet. Current financing and management provided by the Tropical Science Center and Forum One Communications. Past support from the World Bank and the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD). Contact Wagner Lopez info@cloudforestalive.org with comments or questions.
